I had wanted to try Restaurant Story in Old Market Hall in Helsinki for ages, so we finally went there for breakfast one morning a couple of weeks ago. The Old Market Hall is right by the sea and next to Kauppatori and open most days from 8 am to 6 pm.
It was a beautiful, warm morning so we sat on the terrace to eat. A rare occurrence was that there were no seagulls in sight! I had to mention this since they are notoriously annoying and will steal your ice cream in seconds. There’s probably no need to mention they’re always present when you’re trying to eat something somewhere by the sea in Helsinki. So thanks for sleeping in, seagulls!
We ordered the breakfast platters (14,50 € each). I have to say I was slightly disappointed when the food arrived. The quality of the items was great, but for almost for the price of a hotel breakfast buffet I would have wanted to have more food, quite frankly. So, a relatively tasty and Instagrammable breakfast, but the price was just too much.
I really loved the atmosphere of the restaurant, so I still want to try their lunch (apparently the salmon soup is legendary). For breakfast, I’d probably pick one of the other dishes, such as eggs benedict or pancakes.
The market halls are something you should definitely check out if you’re in Helsinki. There’s three of them: in addition to the one I’m talking about in this post, there’s one in Hietalahti and one in Hakaniemi. They’re packed with fruit and vegetable vendors, meat and fish vendors and lately all kinds of cute little cafés and restaurants.
