JEBEL HAFEET

Jebel Hafeet

Jebel Hafeet, “the empty mountain” is located on the border of UAE and Oman in Al Ain. Its highest peak is at 1249 metres, and you can get almost all the way to the top by car – of course! The mountain, along with Al Ain Zoo was the main attraction on our brief day trip. I really enjoyed the whole day, but especially this part. It’s hard to grasp the vastness of the desert, and witnessing it from some distance above made that even more clear!

The road to the top is curlier than a curly fry, with 60 turns! Driving up was amazing, but I have to admit I was a little relieved there was a barrier on the side so I could not see down too much…

At the top there’s a parking lot, a hotel, a café and almost 360 degree views all around. The visibility was not as good as we hoped for, so we didn’t get proper views of the city of Al Ain. Still it was beautiful and we saw well to the Oman side and to the desert.

There was a lot more people at the top than I had expected, and finding a parking spot was a bit of a challenge. We had to almost literally reverse on a group of people standing and taking group pictures in the only vacant spot. They just couldn’t be bothered to move despite they were fully aware of us trying to park. The traffic in the UAE is really a battle of the unfazed…

Indeed we had a perfect timing by accident. On the way back down we stopped on one of the many viewing spots to see the sunset. People were setting up their portable barbeques in the many parking lots, spending time with their friends and families, enjoying the views.

We were lucky to see the sky change to pink and deep orange as we found our way to the highway and towards Dubai. It was one of those simple evenings and beautiful memories that I cherish the most.
