A LAZY GIRL’S GUIDE TO EXERCISE: BEACH WORKOUT

Since it’s still early spring and the temperatures haven’t soared to the 30’s yet, we headed to the beach for a short, but sweaty, workout. We decided to skip the free facilities in the area (see the bottom of the post for tips!) and do a quick workout. I love working out… most of the time. Being tired is a slippery slope to getting lazy and having a hard time to get motivated. That’s why I like to keep it simple and low-pressure.

Jumping and leaping is natural for kids, but as adults we should do it more. It’s good for your bones, as well as a very effective way to do cardio. Since I’m the clumsiest person ever, I have a love-hate relationship with plyometric workouts. They’re such a great way of exercising if you’re busy and really wouldn’t have the time otherwise.

Here are a couple of my favorite movements. For example, you can do each movement for 15 to 20 reps, 2 to 4 times each. Please keep in mind I’m not a trained professional.

DON’T FORGET TO WARM UP
Start with jumping jacks or running short sprints to warm up.

WALKING LUNGES
Take a big step forward until your back knee is almost on the ground. Both your front and back leg should be at 90 degree angle, but your knee shouldn’t be bent so much that it goes over your toes vertically. When you hit the position in the picture, use your glutes and your front leg to push back up. Keep the weight on the heel of your front leg.

Try not to lose your balance! I find it helps a lot when I keep my hands on my hips.

SQUATS
Good ol’ favorite! Depending on what muscles you want to target, place your feet at shoulder-width (quads) or a little further apart (glutes & hamstrings). Make sure your knees and toes point in the same direction to help prevent hurting your knees. Keep your hands at your hips or in front of you for balance, like I’m doing in the picture. “Sit” down until your knees are bent at 90 degrees, then push back up using your glutes. Keep the weight at your heels all the time.

FROGGY LEAPS
These are fun and so easy! Start by squatting slightly, then jump up and push yourself off the ground. You can do these moving forward or staying in place like I’m doing in these pictures (to prevent myself from falling on my face). Doing 20 of these three times is good cardio.

KNEE TUCK JUMP
Again, start in a semi-squat position. Jump as high as you can and hug your knees in the air, which means bringing your knees as close to your chest as you can. Clearly my lightning-speed was too much for the photographer. ūüôā

Land carefully, squatting as deep as you can. Believe it or not, I almost landed on my behind this time…

PUSH UPS
You can do these with your knees on the ground, or just toes.

WOHOO, YOU’RE DONE!

WORKING OUT FOR FREE IN DUBAI MARINA & JBR
If you’re spending your vacation here in Dubai Marina or Jumeirah Beach Residences area, here’s a couple of tips for a free outdoor workout. You’ll see a lot of people running and walking around the Dubai Marina Promenade, and I would suggest this too. The promenade is right along the water.

On the beach walk on the JBR side there is a running track along the beach and gym equipment that is available for anyone to use. All the way in the northern end by Skydive Dubai there is a crossfit-style outdoor gym that you can use free of charge. It’s a little out of the beaten path so not that easy to come across, but I’d definitely recommend looking for it.

If you’re renting a vacation condo, there is usually a gym in the building or in the community that is free for the residents to use, as well as a pool if you’re a swimmer.

Do you work out on your vacation or do you stick to sightseeing?

Suuntasimme rannalle tekemään nopean ja erittäin helpon jumpan, jolla varmasti hiki irtoaa vaikka lämpötilat eivät Dubaissa vielä yli kolmenkymmenen huidelleetkaan näin maaliskuun alussa.

Dubai Marinan ja JBR:n alueella on hyv√§t mahdollisuudet lenkkeill√§ ja tehd√§ treenej√§ ulkona ilmaiseksi. Hotelleista l√∂ytyy yleens√§ hyv√§t salit ja tietysti uima-altaat, samoin vuokra- ja loma-asuntokomplekseista. JBR:n puolella on rantapromenadi, jossa on hyv√§ lenkkeily”polku” (pohja kivetyst√§ pehme√§mpi), tosin jos haluaa lenkin muistuttavan lenkki√§ v√§istelyharjoituksen sijaan, rantabulevardille kannattaa suunnata aamulla ja arkisin. JBR:n pohjoisp√§√§st√§, aivan Skydive Dubain vierest√§ l√∂ytyy ilmainen, crossfit-tyyppinen ulkoilmasali.
